Car Title Steps

Car title fees by state

To transfer a car title, the buyer usually pays the state a title fee when applying for the new title. Replacing a lost title costs a separate duplicate title fee. Most of these are state fees, but in some states, such as Ohio and Idaho, counties set or add part of the fee. Each confirmed fee links to its source.

What about other states?

Our guide to the state title office shows the title fee and form we have for every state, and the lost title guide covers duplicate titles.

Common questions

How much does it cost to transfer a car title?

Fees differ by state, and in some states by county, so there is no single national price. The table on this page shows the transfer fee we confirmed for each state, with its official source.

Who pays the title transfer fee, the buyer or the seller?

The buyer usually pays it, because the buyer applies for the new title. Your state guide, linked from the table, has the details.

Is a duplicate title cheaper than a title transfer?

Not always. In Pennsylvania, both cost $72. In Georgia, the title fee is $18 and a replacement title is $8.

Is there a late fee for transferring a title?

Some states charge a penalty when the buyer applies after the deadline. Florida, Georgia and North Carolina all do. Your state guide shows the amount and the deadline.

Do title fees include sales tax and registration?

No. The fees on this page cover the title only. Sales tax, use tax and registration are charged separately, and each state guide lists the ones we confirmed.
