Car Title Steps

Car title at the DMV: what to do in your state

To transfer a car title, the seller signs the title over to the buyer, and the buyer applies for a new title at the state motor vehicle agency, often called the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The agency name and the fee differ by state. Replacing a lost title uses a separate duplicate title form. Pick your state below.

Common DMV title tasks

How a title transfer works

  1. The seller signs the title over. The seller signs and dates the title and gives it to the buyer.
  2. The buyer applies. The buyer takes the signed title, the state's title application and the fee to the state agency.
  3. The state issues a new title. The new title is in the buyer's name. Your state guide has the details and deadlines.
